'The Letter Scene'. Every good opera, or film must have a Letter Scene! La Traviata being an apt example. This one rates as one of the best! Without the superb acting of Maggie Smith, and Celia Johnsone, it could so easily have become a mere parody of what Muriel Spark intended. 10/10.
'Plaisir d'amour'.Giovanni Martini. Recital film. This was captured just a few months before Dame Janet's early retirement from the operatic stage, in Donizetti's 'Maria Stuardia' and Gluck's 'Orfeo et Euridice'. Thankfully, for us, her recitals continued.
