The red shift of light from distant galaxies is a key fact in support of the expanding universe/big bang theory. It is generally accepted that this is due to the stretching of photons as the universe expands but can be treated mathematically and simply explained with doppler effect. You should understand the connection and be able to calculate the connection between speed and change in frequency.
