Although steeply graded here, No. 143 quietly approaches Rhyd Ddu around the tight curves of Ffridd Isaf in gradually clearing but still very windy weather. These powerful locomotives are ideal for preserving the tranquility of the National Park, contrary to the beliefs of the anti-railway lobby when re-building of the WHR was still under debate!
