Melody is well known througout Macedonia, and it is danced by many communities regardless of today's political borders and languages spoken. The comical lyrics to this famous song, "Zajko kokorajko" are in Slavonic Macedonian, and to Greek speakers the dance is known as Zaiko. This gajda recording is from Dennis Boxell's collection. Pece Atanasovski orchestra. Pece (1927-1996) was from Dolneni/Prilep, and the most accomplished Macedonian gajda player of his time. He arranged this version. The rhythm is 11/8 (22322). This gajda is different to the djura gajda of Thrace and Bulgaria, in that it has a cylindrical bore, not a conical bore. Tonic is typically between A and Bb.
