non Newtonian fluid vibrating on top of my speaker in a baking tray.
Simple experiment:
mix equal quantities of cornflour and water,
Pour into a baking tray,
Strap it to a loudspeaker,
Play a sine wave at various frequencies,
blow the fluid with a straw,
then clean up the awful mess you just made!

After fiddling with the settings of my guitar and amp for a while, I got it feeding back a constant tone of about G#, which I could vary by bending the string. We had a small puddle of fairly thick cornflour/water paste sat on a rigid plastic sheet on top of the speaker, held in place at one corner. The results were these impressive moving fingerlike growths.

Cornflour in water, very thick mix, on a speaker vibrating at 50hz courtesy of a frequency generator. The plastic is actually trying to slip away from the speaker which is why I'm grabbing it.
Yes I know it's pretty lame, but I had lots of spare time. The liquid I put the stick in is white spirit. The stuff that I put in my mouth is cornflour. any questions please ask=]
