Chinese cultural groups from all over the state and the world converged on Ala Moana Beach Park on Aug. 13 to participate in the annual Dragon Boat Races, wherein teams paddle enormous (and heavy) carved wooden boats along shore in a race to capture their flag.

Scenes from the last day of the FIRST in Hawaii Regional Robotics Competition. Students from schools across the state and the country gathered at the Stan Sheriff Center at the University of Hawaii to show off their math, science, and engineering skills in the form of ball playing robots. FIRST was founded by inventor and entrepreneur Dean Kamen, who was in Honolulu for the event.
The "world premiere" of the Apple iPhone at the flagship Apple Store at Ala Moana Center in Honolulu. The store is closed up, the windows blacked out, and the wait begins. Eventually, claps and cheers as hundreds part with hundreds to own Apple's first mobile phone.
The Obon ceremony and bon dance at the Waipahu Soto Zen Taiyoji. Using the "Movie Mix" feature of the Flip Video software to create a basic, edited movie from 25 individual short clips. I selected all clips on the camera, chose "no soundtrack," used the "Full Length" template and clicked "Create."

A life-sized, 1,100-pound bronze sculpture of Elvis Presley was unveiled today on the grounds of the Neal Blaisdell Center in Honolulu. The 6'2" music icon is depicted atop a pedestal, commemorating his 1973 "Aloha from Hawaii" concert. It was a major television milestone, broadcast live, globally, to over a billion people in over 30 countries. The statue was donated by TV Land.
