Da Che Gu opera (???) is considered a living fossil of the Chinese folk opera as it had been in existence for hundreds of years. It was once popular thtoughout the Southern Fujian province as well as the Chaozhou speaking regions of Guangdong province, and had taken on different styles in different regions. The clip here features the Zhangpu style of Da Che Gu opera.

This is a ritual of welcoming the Gods back to temple after they (represented by their various statues) had finished parading around the temple neighbourhood on holy lifts during the celebration of the Gods' birthdays. The rocking motion of the lifts is said to be caused by the power of the Gods and not a deliberate act by the lift bearers.
